Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum

Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum is situated nearby to the last sugar factory in Puunene, Maui. It is an award winning museum that offers exhibition on artifacts collected in Maui. It educates the tourists about the most influential periods in the history of Maui. It aims to preserve the sugar plantation history of Maui. The museum covers an area of 1,800 square feet.

When visiting the museum, you will get to take a look at the development of the water resources and sugar mills in Maui.  You can view artifact collections that date back to 1860s – 1960s. The documents and photographs show the sugar industries in Hawaii. It also shows the life of workers from different ethic backgrounds at the sugar plantation in Hawaii. The photographs offer detailed explanation of the sugar making process. It explains how sugarcane is introduced to Hawaii. The exhibition also shows how the plantation managers hire the laborers from foreign countries.

You will also get to see the house of the sugar plantation mill superintendent. The house of the sugar plantation mill superintendent was built in 1900. Every now and then, there will be changing exhibitions at the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum. It offers both permanent and changing exhibitions.

Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum is equipped with facilities such as gift shop, rental facilities, picnic area, and dining area. It is equipped with handicap facilities so people with disability problems should have no problem moving around. The museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. It is open everyday except on holidays such as Christmas. If you are not sure whether the museum is open, you can call the customer service. The admission fee is about $7 per adult and $5 per senior. For children aged in between 6 – 17 years old, the admission fee is $2. Children aged less than 5 years old don’t have to pay the admission fee. There are 15 parking stalls for cars and 2 parking stalls for buses.

Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Company used to be one of the largest companies that produce sugarcane. The company is responsible for harvesting and processing sugarcane. The sugarcane crop has supported the Hawaiian economy for many years even though they have been replaced with cheaper foreign versions.  Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum can be reached within 10 minutes from Kahului Airport.
